Violence Risk Factors |
Gun violence can happen anywhere, to anyone, at any time. That's why all of Cincinnati's citizens must come together and help prevent further violence.
There are some risk factors which mean some of our people are more likely to experience gun violence. These risk factors are:
Less than a high school education
Unemployment | ||
Legal income of less than $10,000 per year
African-American Male
Dysfunctional families
Confrontational attitudes and behavior
Violent neighborhoods
Uninsured | ||
History of substance abuse/dealing
History of incarcerations |
This doesn't mean anyone who has one or more of these risk factors is doomed to a life of violence. Help is available, and a simple phone call can be the first step to a better future.
The cost of gun violence is felt most keenly in the permanent damage done to individuals and families. Some of the other costs of gun violence are:
| Medical expenses averaging more than $2.3 billion per year; 85% of these expenses are for patients who have no health insurance | |||
|
Legal expenses (including incarceration) averaging $2.4 billion per year
|
Economic losses of more than $20 billion per year
|
Other indirect costs to society of more than $100 billion per year |
Clearly gun violence does not just affect "bad" people in "bad" neighborhoods. The costs are too great for any of us to ignore.
Stop The Violence.
